Car rental guide

What to check before you rent, in general terms. Each offer's rental terms give the exact rules.

Airport desks are the easy choice after a flight and often open early and late, but many add an airport fee. City branches can cost less if you don't need the car on the first day, though their hours are usually shorter. Search both and compare the totals.

Most rental companies hold a security deposit on a credit card in the main driver's name when you collect the car, and release it after you return it. Debit cards are not always accepted, so check the payment terms of your offer before you travel.

The usual minimum age is 21, and drivers under 25 often pay a young driver fee. Some car groups and countries set higher limits. Bring a full driving licence; if it is not in the Latin alphabet, or the country asks for one, you will also need an International Driving Permit.

Picking up in one place and returning in another suits road trips and airport-to-city journeys. Enter a different drop-off location in the search. A one-way fee is common, and taking the car across a border needs the rental company's permission.

Check the fuel policy: full-to-full is usually the fairest. Look at the mileage limit if you plan long drives. Child seats, extra drivers and GPS are normally paid at the counter, so add them to your budget.

Have your licence, the card for the deposit and your booking confirmation ready. Walk around the car and photograph any damage before you drive off, and note the fuel level. If your flight is late, let the rental desk know.
