What this plan covers
For visitors driving from Jordan, these 12 days lead from Aqaba through the Durra–Haql crossing, Tabuk and AlUla, then give four days to Madinah and two to Makkah before the return drive begins. Road days leave room for prayer pauses; city days place ziyarat between visits to the masjids. Arrange border eligibility, visa and vehicle paperwork first with the official authorities. Confirm your Hegra tour with the operator. In Madinah, use Nusuk for the Rawdah permit slot and the published timetable for prayer times.
Opening hours, prices and routes can change, so check the details before you set off.
Day 1
2 stops · about 2 hrs
Getting around
1
Jordan to Saudi Arabia: Durra and Haql crossing
Getting around
half a day
Al-Durra connects Aqaba in Jordan with Haql in Saudi Arabia. Reports describe around-the-clock operation, but crossing hours and eligibility can change with nationality and border conditions.
Good to know
Confirm current visa, crossing and vehicle requirements with the official border authority before departure. Published figures for the distance to Haql conflict, so confirm the distance before you go. Drive from Aqaba toward the Al-Durra terminal, then continue toward Haql on the Saudi side.
2
Northern road: Haql, Tabuk and AlUla
Getting around
half a day
From Haql, the road leads toward Tabuk. Reported safety features on the Tabuk–Haql road include signs, markings, warning strips and barriers.
Good to know
Allow time for border processing, then check road conditions before continuing to Tabuk. Join the Tabuk–Haql road from Haql and continue toward Tabuk.
Day 2
2 stops · about 1.5 hrs
Getting around
3
Northern road: Haql, Tabuk and AlUla
Getting around
half a day
Beyond Tabuk, the overland route crosses desert landscapes toward AlUla. The historic Syrian Hajj route also passed through the AlUla area on its way to Madinah.
Good to know
Consult Experience AlUla while choosing your onward route from Tabuk. Leave Tabuk on the AlUla road, allowing for a Dhuhr pause during the drive.
4
Getting to and from AlUla
Getting around
30 minutes
Arrival in AlUla puts you in place for the following day’s Hegra visit. Settle your local travel arrangements after the desert crossing and before the onward drive to Madinah.
Good to know
Before heading out again, confirm your accommodation directions and the Hegra operator’s meeting arrangements. Continue into AlUla from the Tabuk route, following the directions for your chosen stay.

5
Hegra (Madain Salih)
Culture
half a day
Hegra was a stop on the Incense Route, which connected southern Arabia with regions across the Mediterranean and Asia. Nabataean tombs carved into rock stand alongside ancient inscriptions and historic wells. Visitors come to understand this earlier chapter of AlUla’s history. An official tour brings you to Hegra’s rock-cut tombs and inscriptions. Their Nabataean setting gives this AlUla day a historical focus distinct from the later ziyarat in Madinah.
Good to know
Ask the tour operator for current booking and meeting instructions. Follow the official tour operator’s directions from your AlUla base.
Elephant Rock is a natural rock formation in AlUla, shaped by erosion over millions of years. It is separate from AlUla Old Town, the local stop before today’s drive. Begin with the AlUla Old Town stop before the intercity drive. Elephant Rock is a separate AlUla location, so directions for that formation should not be treated as directions to Old Town.
Good to know
Ask locally for directions to Old Town before leaving your accommodation. Make the local trip from your AlUla stay before joining the road to Madinah.
7
Getting to and from AlUla
Getting around
half a day
The onward drive brings you from AlUla to Madinah. A route via Khaybar is reported, while published figures for the distance between the cities differ.
Good to know
Settle on your route before departure and identify a suitable place to pause for prayer. Head toward Madinah on your checked route; Khaybar lies on the reported road option.

Al-Masjid an-Nabawi (the Prophet's Mosque)
Culture
half a day
After the Hijrah, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ built the mosque in Madinah with the Companions. Its first structure used mud brick and palm trunks. Prayer, learning and community affairs took place here, connections that bring Muslims to the mosque during ziyarat. Masjid an-Nabawi anchors your Madinah stay. The Rawdah lies between the tomb of the Prophet ﷺ and his minbar. Today, you have time to learn the mosque’s current layout.
Good to know
Follow posted signs and staff directions instead of relying on a fixed entrance. Approach from your Madinah accommodation using current local directions.
Day 6
2 stops · about 2 hrs
Culture
9
Quba Mosque
Culture
1.5 hours
Quba Mosque was the first mosque built after the Hijrah. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ helped lay its foundation, and the Companions completed it. Its beginnings give this Madinah ziyarat stop its connection to the migration. Quba recalls the early Muslim community after the migration from Makkah. The village where it was founded is now part of Madinah.
Good to know
Agree on a collection point with your driver before continuing to the next mosque. Travel from your Madinah base toward the Quba district by a city route.
Masjid al-Qiblatayn is linked to the change in prayer direction from Jerusalem to the Kaaba in Makkah, during a prayer led by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Its name means “two qiblas.” Muslims include the mosque in ziyarat to recall that change. Here the focus is the mosque’s association with the change of qibla. It makes a distinct historical stop after Quba without extending the morning into another long visit.
Good to know
Accounts differ on where the change took place; keep that distinction in mind during your visit. Continue from Quba on the city route agreed with your driver.

Mount Uhud and the Uhud martyrs' cemetery
Culture
1.5 hours
The Battle of Uhud took place at the foot of Mount Uhud in the 3rd year after the Hijrah. Shuhada Uhud is the burial place of Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) and others. Muslims come to remember the battle and those who died in it. Mountain and cemetery stand together at the place of the Battle of Uhud. The cemetery is commonly viewed from outside its wall; follow the access directions you find there.
Good to know
The ground can be uneven and steep. Follow your scholar’s guidance when visiting the cemetery. Take a city road from your Madinah base toward Mount Uhud.
12
Seven Mosques (Al-Masajid as-Sab'ah, Khandaq)
Culture
1.5 hours
These small masjids stand in the area associated with the trench dug to defend Madinah during the Battle of the Trench. Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) is credited with the plan. Visitors come to trace this episode in the city’s history. Near Mount Sala’, the masjids connect this morning’s ziyarat to the Battle of the Trench. Despite the familiar name, published counts of the group differ.
Good to know
View the area as a cluster, rather than expecting a set number of standing masjids. Continue from Uhud toward the Mount Sala’ area on your agreed route.
Day 8
2 stops · about 1.5 hrs
Culture
13
Ar-Rawdah ash-Sharifah (the Rawdah)
Culture
30 minutes
The Rawdah is the area inside Masjid an-Nabawi between the tomb of the Prophet ﷺ and his minbar. A hadith describes it as “a garden from the gardens of Paradise.” Visitors seek an appointment for this part of the mosque. Your visit follows the date and slot on your Nusuk permit, rather than a general time assigned to this day. The Rawdah is inside the mosque you have already come to know.
Good to know
Obtain a permit through Nusuk and follow its instructions. Access arrangements can change, so ask staff for directions and follow the signs. Use the route indicated for your permit appointment within Masjid an-Nabawi.
14
Al-Masjid an-Nabawi (the Prophet's Mosque)
Culture
half a day
Remaining at the mosque around your Rawdah appointment lets the day follow its actual slot and the daily prayers, without another outward ziyarat before the drive to Makkah.
Good to know
Set aside time afterward to prepare for the next day’s departure. Return from your accommodation by the local route familiar from your earlier visit.
Day 9
1 stop · about 1 hr
Getting around
15
Road between Makkah and Madinah
Getting around
a full day
This highway links the holy cities along a route associated with the migration of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Reported highway distance figures differ, so plan prayer and rest stops around the road you actually travel.
Good to know
Rest areas, fuel stations and other services are reported along the highway. Verify conditions before departure. Leave Madinah on the highway toward Makkah, pausing for prayer and rest en route.
Day 10

16
Masjid al-Haram (the Grand Mosque)
Culture
half a day
Masjid al-Haram stands in Makkah with the Kaaba at its centre. It began as an open area around the Kaaba, with nearby houses rather than a surrounding wall. Later expansions added a low wall and covered colonnades, shaping the mosque where Muslims gather for prayer and Umrah. The Kaaba stands at the centre of Masjid al-Haram. Spend this visit learning the current directions within the mosque before moving between its prayer spaces and the Umrah areas.
Good to know
Movement arrangements can change; ask staff and follow the Grand Mosque’s signs. Approach from your Makkah accommodation by the current local route.
17
Umrah rites at Masjid al-Haram
Culture
half a day
The rites are ihram, tawaf, sa‘i between Safa and Marwa, then leaving ihram. Your group leader or scholar can guide you through each rite.
Good to know
Consult the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah or Nusuk for current permit arrangements. Use posted directions within Masjid al-Haram for the areas involved.

Culture
18
Safa and Marwa
Culture
1.5 hours
Safa and Marwa are two low hills by the Grand Mosque, connected by the covered Mas‘a. An account associates the hills with Hajar’s search for water for Ismail (peace be upon him). Visitors encounter this place within the mosque in connection with sa‘i. A separate look at the Mas‘a helps you recognise where Safa and Marwa sit within Masjid al-Haram after the previous day’s Umrah visit. The covered route joins the two hills.
Good to know
Designated routes for older visitors and people with disabilities have been reported; follow current directions on site. Reach the Mas‘a from inside the Grand Mosque using its posted signs.
19
Zamzam well
Culture
30 minutes
Zamzam Well is within Makkah’s Grand Mosque. An expansion moved it below the Mataf surface and cleared obstacles around the tawaf area. Visitors now encounter Zamzam water through the mosque’s dispensing arrangements. Zamzam dispensers offer chilled and room-temperature water. This is a brief pause within Masjid al-Haram rather than a separate trip across Makkah.
Good to know
Use the drinking areas marked on site; dispenser arrangements may change. Look for posted Zamzam directions while inside Masjid al-Haram.
Day 12
1 stop · about 1 hr
Getting around
20
Road between Makkah and Madinah
Getting around
a full day
Beginning the return drive puts you back on the highway linking Makkah and Madinah. Reports describe fuel stations, rest areas and other services along this road.
Good to know
Before leaving Makkah, check the onward route beyond this highway and current road conditions. Depart Makkah on the highway toward Madinah; choose prayer pauses according to your progress.
The road approach takes four days through the crossing, Tabuk and AlUla. Four days follow in Madinah, then a driving day to Makkah and two days there. Day 12 begins the return drive. On driving days, choose prayer pauses according to the route and conditions you find.
What should I check before crossing from Jordan?
Ask the official border authority about current eligibility, visa and vehicle requirements. Al-Durra has been reported to operate around the clock; verify its hours before travelling. Reported Saudi customs steps include vehicle documents, inspection and an insurance-booth direction for non-Saudi vehicles. Confirm the procedure with the official border authority before departure.
What should I wear and bring?
Choose modest clothing suitable for masjids and footwear suited to the uneven ground reported around Uhud. Carry the passport and vehicle ownership document identified in the reported land-port procedure. Keep your travel documents and visit details accessible between cities.
How do I get around after parking the car?
For Madinah ziyarat, reported options include a hotel-arranged car, a taxi by the hour or a guided half-day tour; agree the route and price before leaving. In AlUla, follow your Hegra operator’s meeting directions. At the holy mosques, use current signs and staff guidance.
When should I drive and check prayer times?
October to March is the season specified for this northern trip. Check road and border conditions before each driving day. For prayer times, refer to the Haram’s published timetable or Nusuk; for the Rawdah, follow your permit slot rather than a fixed schedule.
